The Wonders of WakaliWood Action Film Studio

The Wonders of WakaliWood Action Film Studio

At Fantastic Fest back in September, a lot of genre film fans were introduced to Bad Black and the phenomenon known as Wakaliwood. Wakaliwood is an action movie production studio in Uganda. Homegrown, handmade, self-taught, the films that come out of Wakaliwood are everything I love about genre film. They’re hilarious and awesome. So I was very excited when a friend from the film festival texted me the other day about this week’s Weird Wednesday movie at The Alamo Drafthouse; Who…

A Book, A Movie, A Craft Project

A Book, A Movie, A Craft Project

Last night I finished C. Robert Cargill’s excellent dark fantasy Queen of the Dark Things. A sequel to his novel Dreams and Shadows, Queen of the Dark Things chronicles the continuing adventures of the eternally unfortunate sorcerer, Colby Stevens. It’s a fun romp around the world, leaving Texas behind for the Australian Outback. Overall a heart breaker full of horrific and fantastic elements, Queen of the Dark Things is a quality piece of fantasy. It’s a fast read, and was…

Trolls, Weddings, Etc

Trolls, Weddings, Etc

Yesterday was a wonderfully productive day. I think I’m climbing back up out of the dark hole I’ve been in since my friend died. I got caught up on client work, I went for a walk, and I even left the house to go somewhere with people! I tried to call both my congressmen to express my displeasure with their support of Jeff Sessions; each mailbox was full, but it sure felt good to try. I didn’t quite finish last…

Thoughts On The Future

Thoughts On The Future

I always figured that the big historical movements I would live through would be things like massive climate upheavals, food and water shortages, and weird economic shifts brought by the early phases of space colonization.  I did not expect the shit that happened this past weekend. Neo-Nazi Steve Bannon is not-so-secretly running the administration. Hundreds of lawful permanent residents can’t get a straight answer on whether they can get back into the United States. ISIS and any other group with…

Speculations Newsletter

Speculations Newsletter

I’m excited to announce the launch of one of my projects, a weekly newsletter called Speculations. Each issue of Speculations will feature ten real news items that could easily inspire a tale of speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror).  Scientific discoveries, new art forms, mysterious murders, that sort of thing. If you’re a writer looking for an idea, this is the newsletter for you.  If you’re a fan of the genre and love hearing about how weird the real world…

Of Coffee and Escapism

Of Coffee and Escapism

Yesterday I had my first cup of coffee in over a week. And I drank it at 5pm. It was delicious. And my brain did not shut down until about 2am last night. The good news is that I was in the grips of an idea I’ve been trying to flesh out for weeks, and that particular project finally has a working model and can get started soonish. The bad news is that, to turn off those whirling gears, I…

Introducing Myself

Introducing Myself

Hi there, I’m Jenn Burroughs. I write science fiction, fantasy, and horror. This blog is both an experiment and a ridiculous dream. By following the techniques laid out by such entities as The Self Publishing Podcast, Joanna Penn, and the DIY MFA, I hope to connect with those elusive individuals who enjoy my ideas and my stories. I know you’re out there; I will find you, and I will entertain you. I’ve been dabbling as a writer for as long…

On Grief and Getting Back Up

On Grief and Getting Back Up

January has been a bit rough for me. A close friend of mine decided to drop dead of a heart attack, and I came down with some kind of respiratory and stomach virus super combo the day after that. Driving across Texas for the funeral was extra exciting with my guts in such a state. Then of course, the Apocalypse officially kicked off last Friday. I have indulged in watching the Nazi-getting-punched video several times, as an antidote to the…

Thoughts on the structure of Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey

Thoughts on the structure of Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey

Caliban’s War is the second book in The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey, which is being adapted for television by SyFy. I could not put this book down. I’m a little in love with Corey’s writing style, and I wish to dissect it and learn all the secrets. S. A. Corey is actually a team of two co-authors, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. If you aren’t familiar, The Expanse is an epic space opera set a few hundred…

Some thoughts on The Broken Earth series by N. K. Jemisin

Some thoughts on The Broken Earth series by N. K. Jemisin

During December and this first part of January, I inhaled the first two installments of N. K, Jemisin’s The Broken Earth Trilogy, via audiobook.  When I take in a book as audio, the clearest signs of the book’s quality are how clean my house is and how much exercise I’ve had lately. I searched for mindless little tasks to do so that I could listen to Robin Miles’ excellent performance of Jemisin’s prose.  I spent about a month and a…
