The Wonders of WakaliWood Action Film Studio

The Wonders of WakaliWood Action Film Studio

At Fantastic Fest back in September, a lot of genre film fans were introduced to Bad Black and the phenomenon known as Wakaliwood. Wakaliwood is an action movie production studio in Uganda. Homegrown, handmade, self-taught, the films that come out of Wakaliwood are everything I love about genre film.

They’re hilarious and awesome.

So I was very excited when a friend from the film festival texted me the other day about this week’s Weird Wednesday movie at The Alamo Drafthouse; Who Killed Captain Alex. A ridiculous action movie that Isaac, the founder of Wakaliwood, made for the fun of it years ago, it became immensely popular locally and slowly gained a cult following after being posted on Youtube.

In Uganda, people speak a mix of languages and have varying levels of literacy, so when a movie is being shown in a video hall, they bring in a professional VJ to help out. The VJ talks throughout the film, explaining what’s going on, translating the dialogue, often throwing jokes out there to keep the audience interested. Sometimes this person hasn’t seen the movie either, and is improving the whole time. It’s a little weird at first, but once you get used to it, it’s great.

Anyways, I have a lot to get done today, so I leave you with this:
