Cyber crime, author marketing, and space operas

Cyber crime, author marketing, and space operas

Last night I started reading Chuck Wendig’s cybercrime novel, Zeroes. So far, it’s a lot of fun.  But fun is typically what I expect from Chuck. Zeroes has me thinking about other ways to assemble different characters. This one has a team that has to be assembled by a common thread, here in the form of a government agent.  I may have figured out why the beginning of my scientists vs. kaiju story just didn’t work. Reading fiction for fun…

A Book, A Movie, A Craft Project

A Book, A Movie, A Craft Project

Last night I finished C. Robert Cargill’s excellent dark fantasy Queen of the Dark Things. A sequel to his novel Dreams and Shadows, Queen of the Dark Things chronicles the continuing adventures of the eternally unfortunate sorcerer, Colby Stevens. Speculations Newsletter

Speculations Newsletter

I’m excited to announce the launch of one of my projects, a weekly newsletter called Speculations. Each issue of Speculations will feature ten real news items that could easily inspire a tale of speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, horror).  Scientific discoveries, new art forms, mysterious murders, that sort of thing. I know you’re out there; I will find you, and I will entertain you. I’ve been dabbling as a writer for as long…

Thoughts on the structure of Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey

Caliban’s War is the second book in The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey, which is being adapted for television by SyFy. I could not put this book down. I’m a little in love with Corey’s writing style, and I wish to dissect it and learn all the secrets. S. A. Corey is actually a team of two co-authors, Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. If you aren’t familiar, The Expanse is an epic space opera set a few hundred…
