Stir fry

Stir fry

Busy day. Word count achieved, spent too much time on Twitter, and I finally saw hidden figures! And now I’m throwing together ‘what’s still in the fridge at the end of the week’ stir fry.

Author Marketing And Other Nonsense

Author Marketing And Other Nonsense

Almost missed my post for the day. It’s 6pm here. There’s been a lot going on. Speculations 002 is out today, which you should check out and subscribe to. This issue features me rambling about quantum entanglement. After finishing and publishing the newsletter, today was mostly about wedding stuff that needed to be taken care of. The mountain of craft supplies for decorations continues to grow, and finding a photographer is proving to be something of a challenge. I am completely in favor…

Things That Make Me Happy

Things That Make Me Happy

A quick post this morning before I dive into a busy day. Here’s a list of things I’m happy about: We bought tickets to see John Wick: Chapter 2 on opening weekend. Warren Ellis has written the first season of Castlevania for Netflix. I finally ordered my “wedding dress”, it is ridiculous, and old women are going to be so confused. Marketing efforts on Twitter are starting to show results, which I’ll blog about some time in March. We finally…

Friday and Other Good Things

Friday and Other Good Things

Happy Friday, everyone! The first issue of Speculations is live! You can view the newsletter archive here, and use the form in the sidebar on this page to subscribe. This issue includes the cutest tiny crabs in the world. The other day I started brainstorming a short story, trying to come up with a fun scifi or fantasy setting to channel my general state of grumpiness about the wedding. That evolved into a piece of ancient history in my science fiction…

The Wonders of WakaliWood Action Film Studio

The Wonders of WakaliWood Action Film Studio

At Fantastic Fest back in September, a lot of genre film fans were introduced to Bad Black and the phenomenon known as Wakaliwood. Wakaliwood is an action movie production studio in Uganda. Homegrown, handmade, self-taught, the films that come out of Wakaliwood are everything I love about genre film. They’re hilarious and awesome. So I was very excited when a friend from the film festival texted me the other day about this week’s Weird Wednesday movie at The Alamo Drafthouse; Who…

A Book, A Movie, A Craft Project

A Book, A Movie, A Craft Project

Last night I finished C. Robert Cargill’s excellent dark fantasy Queen of the Dark Things. A sequel to his novel Dreams and Shadows, Queen of the Dark Things chronicles the continuing adventures of the eternally unfortunate sorcerer, Colby Stevens. It’s a fun romp around the world, leaving Texas behind for the Australian Outback. Overall a heart breaker full of horrific and fantastic elements, Queen of the Dark Things is a quality piece of fantasy. It’s a fast read, and was…

Trolls, Weddings, Etc

Trolls, Weddings, Etc

Yesterday was a wonderfully productive day. I think I’m climbing back up out of the dark hole I’ve been in since my friend died. I got caught up on client work, I went for a walk, and I even left the house to go somewhere with people! I tried to call both my congressmen to express my displeasure with their support of Jeff Sessions; each mailbox was full, but it sure felt good to try. I didn’t quite finish last…

Thoughts On The Future

Thoughts On The Future

I always figured that the big historical movements I would live through would be things like massive climate upheavals, food and water shortages, and weird economic shifts brought by the early phases of space colonization.  I did not expect the shit that happened this past weekend. Neo-Nazi Steve Bannon is not-so-secretly running the administration. Hundreds of lawful permanent residents can’t get a straight answer on whether they can get back into the United States. ISIS and any other group with…

Of Coffee and Escapism

Of Coffee and Escapism

Yesterday I had my first cup of coffee in over a week. And I drank it at 5pm. It was delicious. And my brain did not shut down until about 2am last night. The good news is that I was in the grips of an idea I’ve been trying to flesh out for weeks, and that particular project finally has a working model and can get started soonish. The bad news is that, to turn off those whirling gears, I…

On Grief and Getting Back Up

On Grief and Getting Back Up

January has been a bit rough for me. A close friend of mine decided to drop dead of a heart attack, and I came down with some kind of respiratory and stomach virus super combo the day after that. Driving across Texas for the funeral was extra exciting with my guts in such a state. Then of course, the Apocalypse officially kicked off last Friday. I have indulged in watching the Nazi-getting-punched video several times, as an antidote to the…
